senior wellness Product + ux design Jan 2024 - Mar 2024
senior wellness
I researched seniors about what wellness meant to them. As a result, I learned that wellness not only includes physical well-being but also the social aspects, peace of mind, control of one's life as large contributing factors.
focus
For this project, I chose those with arthritis as my focus target and observed how arthritis affects the other areas of their lives that aren't physical.
personas
prevent
Lynn Anderson, At-Risk of Arthritis
Genetically predisposed for arthritis. Must lift heavy objects for job.
delay
Amy Lee, Current Arthritis Patient
Uses fingers for typing daily causing finger joint pain. Desires easy exercise easy on her hands.
recover
Evan Nguyen, Post-Surgery Patient
Doesn't want to wait to recover from joint surgery. Wants to get better on his own.
design objective
Design a product to encourage or aid exercise in activities that will help delay or alleviate arthritis for seniors.
market
I used a White-Space Map to cross current items in two different categories I found most important in my research. The first quadrant is where products don’t currently exist in that cross-section of categories and where my innovation began.
inspo
Fluids form with an emphasis on organic handle formation.
final prototype
materials
I shaped a yellow foam model and used spackle and primer to cover holes. I sanded all the way to wet-sand paper and finished with spray paint.
handle diameter
I changed the handle diameter from 1" in to 1.5". This allowed bigger hands to not over-grip the handle.
waterproofing
To ensure that this product would be watersafe, I covered the final prototype with finished it with a coat of waterproof enamel spray paint.
interactive dial
In my research, seniors are more bound to sesomething linked to success. I added a dial that keeps track of how many laps swum.
sketches
prototypes
cardboard model
The holes under the handle bars were too large and looked cumbersome. The shape was a bit rough according to users.
soft pink foam model
The diameter of the handle bars were too small at 1". The connecting upper piece was not found useful by users, so it was removed in the final.
user testing
Users liked the ability to hold the board in 3 different places and repeat users, preferred the increased size of the handle. Some mentioned how it was on the heavier side even though it floats. For future exploration, the board could be made from EVA.
